EL CHALTÉN Argentina plus 🧊 Perito Moreno Glacier ~ Hiking in Patagonia [Part 2]

el chalten

📅 March, 2015 ▶️ The second part of my El Chaltén Argentina video starts off with the departure from Laguna Piedras Blanca. I then make my way up to Paso del Cuadrado and expierence one of the coldest nights in my life, sleeping in the snow and having the best view on Cerro Torre. The last hike in El Chaltén is Mirador de la Loma with one of the best views you can get in the area. My personal highlight came in the very end though: Perito Moreno Glacier, one of the few glaciers still advancing rather than retreating! I witness a lot of calving there and was totally amazed.

RTW #92, Bariloche, Argentina

#113_bariloche28/04/2015 Bariloche was my last proper hiking opportunity for a while with Buenos Aires and then Uruguay as the next destinations. I made the most of the time by hiking for 3 days and 2 nights through the great landscapes of Argentina’s Lake District, scrambling up steep cliffs and camping on the peaks with some incredible views. RTW #91, Villa la Angostura, Argentina

#112_villalaangostura27/04/2015 I finally made it to Argentina’s Lake District with Villa la Angostura as my entry point. The lovely little town was covered in Volcan Calbuco’s ash and I enjoyed my lonely hike up to one of the nearby mountains, wandering through the bizarre looking landscape. Video from Argentina, Patagonia Part 2

#89_argentina_elchalten_pasodelcuadrado

The day after our emergency fire at snowy Laguna Piedras Blanca offered us a lot of sun and perfect hiking conditions. Rene decided to return to El Chaltén while I was starting the steep ascend to Paso del Cuadrado, eventually spending another freezing und unforgettable night in the snow at 1800m. Leaving the Fitz Roy Skyline in perfect weather conditions behind, I completed my last hikes to Mirador de la Loma, Los Cóndores & Las Águilas before setting an end to my trip in Argentina’s Patagonia by visiting the breathtaking glacier Perito Moreno near El Calafate. I also squeezed in some of the Bouldering from Ushuaia 🙂 Read the rest of this entry »

Live #79, Ushuaia Bouldering, Argentina

#100_ushuaia205/04/2015 After my unfinished hike to Cerro del medio, I had one more thing on my wish list down in Argentina’s most southern town of Ushuaia: Go out for some Bouldering! In the end, I was carrying my climbing shoes with me all the time, so I was happy for every opportunity. Luckily, some friends of my Couchsurfing host took me out to some local spots about 30 km east of the town. Read the rest of this entry »

Live #78, Ushuaia, Argentina

#99_ushuaia103/04/2015 My mind was blown away after 10 amazing days in Antarctica and I returned to Ushuaia just in time for the first fresh snow of the year. The town was surrounded by snow covered peaks and I spent half an hour just looking at them while breathing in the clear crisp air around me. I would spent some days here for a hike before taking the road up north towards one of the bridges that connects the island Tierra del Fuego with the mainland of Argentina. Video from Argentina, Patagonia Part 1

#88_argentina_elchalten_piedrasblancas

A lot of stuff happened back in March 2015 during my two weeks of hiking in the El Chaltén region in the Argentinean portion of Patagonia. In this first part, you will see El Calafate, the hikes to Laguna de los Tres, Laguna Torres, Loma de las Pizarras and finally, the first half of the hike to Paso del Cuadrado until we got stuck in a snowstorm and had to put up an emergency shelter at Laguna Piedras Blanca.

Live #71, Ushuaia and Drake Passage, Antarctica

#92_antarctica_drakepassage25/03/2015 After a bit more than two weeks in El Chaltén and El Calafate, it was now finally time to leave Ushuaia and begin my voyage to the coldest, driest and windiest continent of our planet: Antarctica. Not too many people have the opportunity to go there and I felt very privileged to be one of them. Together with around 80 other passengers, we would take two full days to cross the rough waters of the Drake Passage before we would be able to set foot on Antarctica, probably one of the most impressive places that we can visit. Live #70, Glacier Perito Moreno, Argentina

#91_argentina_peritomoreno23/03/2015 I was finished with all the hikes in El Chaltén, but had one more item on my bucket list near close-by El Calafate: Glacier Perito Moreno, one of the few growing glaciers in Patagonia. I knew it would be super touristy, but everyone I’ve met told me to go there nevertheless and I was not disappointed to do so. It was a perfect sunny day and the temperatures caused a lot of huge ice blocks to fall of the roughly 74m high glacier. You can see one of those video clips in this live update, while the complete video will come in a couple of months. Read the rest of this entry »
